If you think you’ve seen the city from every angle, you really must take to the water. Because from the canals, Groningen really does look very different. The warehouses on the quay suddenly seem so huge, and the bridge you cycle over every day suddenly looks very small. Discover buildings you can’t see from the road. A canal in your front or back garden: what a luxury. Along the Radesingel, you’ll see little gardens bordering the water, in all shapes and sizes. This ‘back route’ offers a unique glimpse behind the houses. Charming little decking areas with a modest bistro set on them. But also substantial patches of land, adorned with pergolas and lush greenery. Let your imagination run wild. How lovely would it be to sit there, with your feet in the water?
Past old warehouses and stately mansions
One of the most beautiful stretches to sail through is the Hoge and Lage der A. The old warehouses along the canal reveal the hustle and bustle of days gone by. As you sail past the quays, you’ll pass no fewer than 28 national monuments and 11 municipal monuments. It’s as if you’re bobbing along in a painting.

The water in the canals reflects the bright sun in your face, until suddenly the light fades. It’s dark under the bridges. Yet there’s just enough light to see the hidden art above your head.
