You've probably walked past Klaas Lageweg's work before. For example, on the wall near a corner building, next to the police station. Here sits a metre-high graffiti work of a pigeon just spreading its wings, ready to fly. The city pigeon is pulling a farmer and his milk cart. The artwork incorporates pixels. Lageweg adds them more often in his paintings and calls them realpixelism. According to Lageweg, pixels provide a modern touch and suit these times.
Pixels and sharp shapes
Klaas Lageweg: "The feeling I have while making art is a feeling I want to have all my life. It feeds my heart. Thanks to all the (online) channels there are these days, posting my art strokes my ego. When I started, there was no internet. I took pictures of works I, as well as other artists, had made and pasted it in a 'black book' or shared it. Through all the different artworks you make, you eventually develop your own style, but you also find your own way in life. For me, that took a while, about 30 years. I love the contrasts I can bring into my artworks. For instance, sharp shapes in a soft work or a work in which I add pixels here and there. I have developed that way over the years and it is now characteristic of my art. I am very down-to-earth, and proud of it, but have also known deep valleys.
