Groningen has something to offer for everyone. Fanatical walking and cycling enthusiasts can indulge themselves with beautiful routes, but families with children also have plenty to discover. Walk barefoot through the mud with the whole family or go on a special adventure with a donkey.
Blotevoetenpad Opende
Is it an obstacle course? A hiking trail? Both? In the Westerkwartier there is a special path: 't Blôde Fuottenpaad, or Blotevoetenpad Opende. Two things we know for sure: your shoes and socks will come off and you won't stay clean. Walking barefoot through mud, over water and grass. Along the way, you climb over tree trunks and crawl along a rope across the ditch. Muddy fun in nature for young and old.

Near the village of Lettelbert, you will find a plank path around a swamp forest. The name Lettelberterpetten, refers to so-called 'petholes' that were created after peat extraction. These filled up with water. The wet peat was laid out to dry on the narrow strips of land between the peat holes, the 'legakkers'. This structure is still recognisable in the landscape. The 2.5 km walking route goes around the marsh forest.

In the woods around Vriescheloo, you can take a very special walk. Here, you can join a donkey on an adventure through the area. At Ger’s Ezelstal, they have 8 different donkeys you can set off with. There are several routes of between 4.5 and 12 kilometres that you can walk. Along the way, there is plenty of time for a nice picnic. Not much of a hiker? You can also go there for a cuddle hour or yoga with the donkeys.

The primal force of nature left a huge mark on the Groningen landscape. In the Appelbergen near Glimmen, this created a wooded landscape full of lakes, hills and shifting sands. So close to the city, it is a popular spot for a family outing. Don't be alarmed if you suddenly see a viper crawling away! At the Pavilion, you can play in the playground and eat delicious pancakes.

Seals regularly swim to the Dollard via the Ems. On the sandbanks close to the coast, the mothers give birth to their young. Hence, the Dollard is nicknamed 'the nursery of the Wadden Sea'. From spring to autumn, a zeehondenkijkwand is set up on the seawall, allowing you to have a good look at the mothers with their pups without disturbing them.

Get the free booklet with assignments at the centre, keep your eyes and ears open and search for 8 nesting boxes. There you can do the assignments from the booklet.

Did you know that gnomes live near Sellingen, Roegwold and the Lauwersmeer? The gnomes are busy all day long. Doing what? If you walk the gnome trail, you will find out for yourself. The gnome trails are signposted routes of between 500 metres and 1.5 kilometres for children aged 3 to 7. The children are given a knapsack and a red pointed hat.
