As soon as the sun shines, nothing beats sitting down on a terrace. In Groningen, there are plenty of places where you can sit in the sun. Along the canals or in a quieter part of town. We have listed a number of sunny terraces for you, so you don't have to search the city for that one sunny spot.

Harbour Cafe | 08:00 - 19:30

Voor 't Voormalige Klein Poortje 10-11 - At the Oosterhaven, the Harbour Cafe has a spacious terrace right by the water. While boats quietly sail in and out of the harbour, you can enjoy what the Harbour Cafe has to offer here. The terrace is just off the busiest streets of the city centre, making it a nice place to unwind in the sun. With good wines, special beers and shared dining dishes, this is a lovely stop during a sunny day in the city.

Noorderstationsstraat 2 - At Bramble you'll find a cosy terrace near the Noorderplantsoen. This cocktail and wine bar is known for its creative drinks and quiet atmosphere. Grote Markt 31 - On the edge of the Grote Markt , Café Willem Albert has a terrace where there is always something to see. It sits in the middle of the city and you can enjoy the sun all day here. Het Pomphuis | 11:00 - 18:00

Kleine der A 7 - For a sunny terrace with a special view, visit Het Pomphuis. This former pump building is located on the water and has a spacious terrace where you can sit in the sun while the boats quietly sail by. Despite its location within the canals, it feels surprisingly quiet here, a great place to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy the view.

't Zwarte Schaap | 12:30 - 19:00

Schuitendiep 52 - On the edge of the city centre, 't Zwarte Schaap offers a lovely sunny terrace on the diep. This eatery has been a household name in the city for years and is known for its relaxed vibe and changing menu with influences from various cuisines. While city life passes you by, enjoy a good glass, a drinks board or a sumptuous dinner in the sun here.

Vandeeg Today | 10:00 - 19:00

Turfsingel 4 - At Vandeeg Today you will find one of the newer sunny terraces in town, near the monumental Dudok on Diep. Here you'll enjoy freshly baked buns, dough bread and good coffee while overlooking the water of the Diepenring. Everything is artisanal and made fresh daily with local ingredients, making the menu ever surprising.

Sunday | 08:00 - 20:00

Kruissingel 1 - In the heart of the Noorderplantsoen you will find the Zondag pavilion. Set amid the greenery of the park, the spacious terrace is one of the city's most popular spots as soon as the sun shines. Just a few minutes from the city centre, but it feels like you're away from the hustle and bustle for a while. For a sunny day, Sunday is the place to be, even if it's not a Sunday.

The Old Guard | 08:30 - 17:00

Gedempte Zuiderdiep 3-5 - Café De Oude Wacht is a classic brown café and a real meeting place in the city centre. On sunny days, the terrace on Zuiderdiep quickly fills up. While cyclists, students and passers-by pass by, you'll have a front-row seat here to watch city life unfold. A perfect place to linger in the sun with a drink.

Café De Sigaar | 12:00 - 17:30

Hoge der A 2 - Café De Sigaar is located on one of Groningen's most beautiful canals. On sunny days, this is a great place to sit on the terrace with a view of the water and the characteristic warehouses of the Hoge der A. Start your day with a good cappuccino, stop by for lunch or linger for a drink while boats sail by. People-watching is also good here, and you can occasionally see the A-bridge turn when a big boat needs to pass under the bridge.

Grote Kruisstraat 73 - On the edge of the Noorderplantsoen you'll find Eetcafé Lambik, a small and cosy café with a terrace overlooking the park. In summer, you sit in the sun almost all day, and the daily changing menu also makes it a great place to linger after a walk in the park for the daily snack.

Aweg 2 - Pernikkel is the place to be for sunny terrace moments all day long. Located near Westerhaven, this is a nice place to enjoy breakfast, lunch or a good cup of coffee. The restaurant is known for its homemade and local dishes, from pancakes to appetisers. Everything here is prepared fresh and without fuss, pure and with attention.

Verlengde Grachtenstraat 1 - Mahalo is a colourful terrace near the Noorderplantsoen. This breakfast and lunch café is known for its all-vegetable and homemade dishes. It is a nice place to settle down after a walk through the park, overlooking the greenery and a plate full of colourful food. The terrace is small, but that is precisely why there is always a cosy and lively atmosphere.
