Molen De Vriendschap
The mill was built in 1785 in Mensingeweer and moved to Winsum in 1801, making it one of the oldest surviving mills in Groningen.
The mill was probably built as a hulling mill at the time. As the mill served purely for husking barley, the stone loft is missing.
Strong winds caused a rod to break during peeling in 1935. In 1941, the hulling stones were removed and used in the mechanical hulling mill De Vriendschap in Hoogezand. Afterwards, a pair of millstones was installed in the mill in the place of the peeling stones. However, the milling seat is so far from the heart of the mill that a usual transmission from track wheel (Gronings; takrad) to milling spindle could not occur. An intermediate wheel was installed; the grinding stones are now driven via a rack wheel, an intermediate disc race and a long spindle. Because of this unique intermediate wheel, the grinding stone turns the other way round.
