De Ploeg
In the early twentieth century, a group of young artists founded the Groningen art circle De Ploeg. The name symbolises the ploughing of the earth; it stands for the development of innovative art. Now, over a hundred years later, De Ploeg’s Groningen expressionism has become an integral part of Dutch art history.
On fire
The Ploegers set fields, trees and skies ablaze. Green skies, purple fields. Even the walls of the Ploeg studio on Lage der A in the city of Groningen were painted red. The use of bright colours and shapes offered a completely new perspective on the Groningen landscape. A hundred years ago, this art group brought about a spectacular renewal in landscape art.
