The Plough
At the beginning of the 20th century, a group of young artists founded the Groninger art group De Ploeg. The name stands for ploughing the earth; for developing innovative art. Now, more than a hundred years later, it is impossible to imagine Dutch art history without the Groningen expressionism of De Ploeg.
On fire
The Ploegers set fields, trees and skies ablaze. Green skies, purple fields. Even the walls of the Ploeg studio on Lage der A in the city of Groningen were painted red. The use of bright colours and shapes offered a completely new perspective on the Groningen landscape. A hundred years ago, this art group brought about a spectacular renewal in landscape art.
