Leekstermeer
The Leekstermeer is one of the picturesque lakes found in the province of Groningen. Although it is not as vast as some other lakes in the Netherlands, it is a wonderful place to enjoy nature. There are therefore several spots around the lake where you can relax and unwind.
History
The lake was formed in the Middle Ages as a result of peat extraction. The digging out of peat created pools, including the Leekstermeer. This lake originally served as a transport route for moving peat and other goods to the surrounding villages and towns. With the emergence of other forms of transport, the Leekstermeer lost its economic importance, but it retained its charm as a recreational area.
Recreation
Nowadays, the Leekstermeer is a popular destination for sailors, water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. Here you can enjoy a day full of fun by, for example, going sailing, canoeing, windsurfing or fishing. The surrounding countryside is also beautiful, making it a valuable asset to the local area. There is plenty of reed growth along the shoreline, which serves as a breeding ground and shelter for many animal species.
