The Jewish community first built a synagogue in Veendam in 1745. In 1892, a new synagogue was opened, as the previous one had fallen into disrepair.

After the Second World War, this building was also demolished. A number of memorial stones from the synagogue were used for the Jewish memorial on Prins Bernhardlaan. This memorial was erected in memory of the 93 Jewish citizens from Veendam and Wildervank who were deported and killed during the Second World War.
