The present church is the remnant of an original late Romanesque cruciform church. The simple yet valuable furnishings form a harmonious whole. Once, in 1398, a murder was committed in this church. The Schieringers and the Vetkopers were locked in a struggle for power. Schieringer Eppo van Nittersum chased the Vetkoper Hayo Wibbens from the church into a nearby vicarage farm. Eppo then set fire to the farmhouse in order to smoke Hayo out. According to the old chronicles, this succeeded: “Thus Hayo Wibena ran back into the church, where he was seized before the high altar and beaten to death.”
