In the second half of the nineteenth century, the gentry farmers of the Hoogeland and Oldambt were thriving. First, they transformed their farms into castles; this was followed by the creation of show gardens modelled on the English style, allowing the farmers to rival the local lords and their beautiful parks. Right in front of the farmhouses, entire miniature landscapes were laid out with exotic trees, undulating slopes, water features and little bridges. The most distinctive feature was the winding paths, from which this type of garden derives its name, ‘slingertoene’. Many show gardens have disappeared, but the Van Huninga's Heem winding garden has been restored to its original glory. The farmhouse itself, a listed building, has been partially restored. The original farmhouse has been converted into a café-restaurant, a meeting place for groups, tourists and local residents. In this way, it contributes to the quality of life in the region and to the preservation of a unique piece of cultural history. Between the winding garden and Oldambtmeer lies a pitch-and-putt course (mini-golf).
