Garnwerd, a centuries-old mound village, is a unique piece of Groningen, situated on the picturesque Reitdiep that connects the city of Groningen with the Wadden Sea. Picturesque indeed, as many painters of the then renowned art group "De Ploeg" found inspiration here. The former ferry house in the village is a national monument and has a rich history. Today, it houses the Bij Hammingh café. At the café, the threshold is low, the atmosphere relaxed and the food tastes good. The basis of the menu is Dutch cuisine with French influences and the food is prepared with love and knowledge. They have several living rooms where you can dine with a beautiful view over the Reitdiepdal, mill de meeuw and the bridge of Garnwerd. Next door to the café is the theatre de Doorrit. A cosy theatre where exhibitions are also regularly held. This can also be hired as a venue for your family party, reception, wedding, buffet or dinner. You can also sleep in the bridge keeper's house and the Doorrit. Everyone is welcome at Hammigh.
