Take a closer look
Until the end of the 18th century, the city administration sat in the medieval Council and Wine House, but a larger and more representative city hall was needed. In 1774, a design competition was launched for the design. Three years later, the winning design was chosen. This was the design by Amsterdam architect Jabob Otten Husly, although he still had to simplify his design slightly. Due to various setbacks (such as the French invasion in 1792) and lack of money, it took quite some time before the building was actually built. In 1869, the building was extended by adding a west wing. The building is still in use as a town hall.
