Observatietoren Ballastplaatbos

From the observation tower in the Ballastplaat forest in National Park Lauwersmeer, you have a great view of the nature reserve and its inhabitants.

Take a closer look

The Observation Tower stands in the Ballastplaat forest. This forest was planted shortly after the Lauwerszee was closed off. Poplar, ash, maple and willow trees were mainly planted here. In the summer months, you can spot the golden oriole here. The white-tailed eagle is also often seen from the tower. You might see it grabbing a fish from the water. Other bird species such as the great egret, the greylag goose, the shelduck and the peregrine falcon are also regularly spotted here. So bring your binoculars! From the tower you also have a view of the large grazers that keep the area from becoming overgrown. They include Scottish Highlanders and Konik horses.

Note: the watchtower is not accessible by car, you have to walk a bit to get there.
