Sint-Jozefkathedraal
The southeast side of the city was chosen for the location of this second Catholic church in the city (the first was St Martin's). Here, a neighbourhood was just under construction(de Oosterpoort), especially for workers.

Hence, the church was named after St Joseph, carpenter and patron of workmen. The church was designed by P.J.H. Cuypers. He turned it into an ornate neo-Gothic structure with a tall, slender tower. The interior was initially quite austere. At its consecration in 1887, the walls were plastered white with only a few decorations. Thanks to donations, the decoration became richer over time. For example, the window frames were replaced with stained glass and bells were added to the tower. The tower's nickname is drunkard's tower, because its hexagonal shape makes two bells visible from any position. By the way, the official name of the church is the Cathedral Church of Saint Martin and Joseph.
