Juffertoren Schildwolde
Take a closer look
The Juffertoren tower bears the date 1289, but experts say it is even older. Nine metres wide and 46 metres high, the structure towers on a rise along the road. It is built entirely of brick and features a brick spire. Its name refers to a juffer, a slender, pointed spruce; the same shape as the spire.
Since 2019, the tower has been equipped with fixed stairs from trans to trans. This allows you to admire the inside of the tower up to the third trans properly and safely. On the ground floor, plop down in the pews to watch the film made of the restoration. This also makes the tower a place to rest, even if you prefer to leave the climbing of the trans to someone else.

Legend of three rich sisters
This historical eye-catcher from the 13th century has a special legend. Once upon a time, there were three rich sisters who spent their lives in vanity. Until they repented. They said goodbye to each other and went their separate ways. As far as they got, they would each build a tower, to an eternal (after)remembrance and penance for their sinful lives.
The first sister made it to Onstwedde, the second found her resting place in Schildwolde and the third made it to Holwierde. The tower in Holwierde neglected and deteriorated and was demolished in 1856. Both other towers still exist, with the Schildwolder tower being the most beautiful in all of Groningerland, according to its own account.
The book Juffertoren Schildwolde 1220-2022 was published in 2022. This unique publication paints a clear picture of the tower's history.
