During a visit to Groningen's city centre, the Martinitoren cannot be missed. For centuries, D´Olle Grieze has looked out over the city with the Grote Markt at its feet. The tower can be climbed up to behind the bells, where you have a clear view over the entire city.

Your visit
Over the past 500 years, Martinitoren burned down, lightning struck and it almost collapsed. Wars were won and lost on its doorstep. The tower stood its ground and, at 97 metres, is still the city's tallest building. Climb up for a piece of tangible history and a fantastic view. Don't count on a lift. Climbing d'Olle Grieze, our old grey, is diligent work. Not for nothing do most visitors spend about an hour inside. But your work-out is richly rewarded. Every few steps you come face to face with the Martini Church's vaults, centuries-old ornaments, bellowing bells or giant flagpoles. At the first trans, you can go outside and walk around the tower at 39 metres. Quite a few more steps up, you come to the clock loft. So between the clockwork dials, you can hear the seagulls above you and the people below in the marketplace. You look out over the city and see the outskirts in the distance.

Film loft
As you climb, experience the chapters from the story of d'Olle Grieze and watch what the city used to look like at a height of 40 metres in the film loft. The ten-minute film impressively brings to life the story of Groningen and the role the Martinitoren played in it.
