Kerk Stitswerd

This 13th-century church stands on the edge of a mound and is dedicated to Saint Georgius. In Groningen, this fourth-century saint is known as Saint George of the legend of the dragon.

The legend tells how Joris killed a dragon that devoured human sacrifices. The interior of the church is austere and covered by a blue-green painted flat lower loft, whose beams are reinforced with elongated flat wooden pieces. Special details include the piscina (a niche in the chancel wall of a church for performing hand and dish washing), a rare wooden lectern and a pulpit from the early 17th century. Also belonging to this church is a special story about a hermit. This story can be read on the site of the Groninger Kerken Foundation.
