One of Europe's most beautiful stream valleys

The Westerwolde path is the longest continuous walking route in Westerwolde. The stream valleys of the rivers Ruiten Aa, Mussel Aa and Westerwoldse Aa, which are among the most beautiful stream valleys in Europe, form the backbone of this multi-day circular walk. The stream valleys are the habitat of many species of animals and plants. In recent decades, the Ruiten Aa stream valley was restored to its original state and the river now meanders again through the enchanting landscape.

A great journey of discovery

Westerwolde's landscape is more than its stream valleys. On your journey through this beautiful area, you will also pass through ancient forests, moors, past fens and arable land, through atmospheric villages and past historic buildings. In short: one big voyage of discovery. The Nicolaaskerk in Onstwedde, the protected villagescape Smeerling, the 14th-century church in Sellingen, the Klooster in Ter Apel and the castle in Wedde are examples of Westerwolde's rich history. During your trip through nature, you can often hear the silence and enjoy the rich flora and fauna in peace.

Westerwolde is the hiking area of the North and was not for nothing named Hiking Municipality of the Year in 2020. Take your time to discover the fascinating area and, above all, take a break to eat something tasty somewhere or to spend a lovely night at Westerwolde's hospitable catering establishments.

Have fun hiking !
