Mudflat walking

Dry-fallen channels and mudflats

At low tide, part of the seabed of the Wadden Sea is exposed. The birds eat their fill and the seals head for the sandbanks to sunbathe. This is also the perfect time to take a walk across the seabed yourself. Sometimes you’ll pause briefly to listen to a story from your guide, but most of the time you’ll be on the move. The wet sand sticks to the soles of your shoes, whilst the wind whips through your hair. It’s not uncommon for the water to reach your ankles or even higher. There’s no more intense way to experience what makes the Wadden Sea a World Heritage Site.

Mudflat walking, whatever way you like

Does mudflat walking sound a bit too strenuous? Not every mudflat walking tour involves hours of trudging through heavy mud. Several organisations offer mudflat walking tours, ranging from trips suitable for children to day trips for experienced adventurers. There’s a wonderful mudflat walking experience here for you too. Or why not combine it with a boat trip? Then you can sit back and relax whilst still enjoying the most beautiful views.
