Castle, mill and animal tour
Cycling, walking, discovering and playing around Slochteren
There are no castles in Groningen, but there are borgen! This is where the borgheren used to live on their large estates. Slochteren has a very beautiful one: the Fraeylemaborg. In the borg you can do a treasure hunt and find out all about the former residents. The large park behind the borg is very beautiful, and extra fun in summer because of the Blotevoetenpad!
From the borg, the route heads towards the Groenedijk. There are three windmills here, all of them polder mills. These were used to pump the land dry so farmers could grow crops on it.
The Baggerputten is a nature reserve with an incredible number of plant, tree, insect and bird species. As many as 20 butterfly species and 25 dragonfly species can be found there. You can look for real animals, but also digital ones. With the app Perfect Earth Animal, you can search for digital animal maps in the forest around the Baggerputten, a bit like Pokémon.
