Serene or perhaps a little spooky? Either way, there’s a special atmosphere in a cemetery – one that blends very well with visual art. The ‘Op Hoogte Gedacht’ project consists of works of art in Groningen’s cemeteries. Two cycle tours introduce you to this art and the beautiful churches adjacent to the cemeteries.
From Obergum to Wierhuizen
Are they fallen paving slabs or is it art? This 46-kilometre cycle route starts and ends at the artwork next to Obergum Church in Winsum. You’ll find three more intriguing artworks in the cemeteries of Zuurdijk, Vierhuizen and Wierhuizen. The church in Wierhuizen was demolished long ago, and yet there is definitely a church here. Just think about that for a moment. Via Pieterburen and Eenrum – both lively villages full of cafés and restaurants – you’ll cycle back to Obergum.
