The best fishing spots

Groningen is bursting with the very best fishing spots. What is a good fishing spot for you depends on the fish you want to catch. But we will give you a few tips anyway. Is that not enough for you? In and around the city

You can fish very well in the city. The city canals, ponds and lakes have excellent fishing. The city canals are known for good whitefish and pikeperch, and the ponds and lakes are full of carp and bream. Kanaal Veendam Musselkanaal

Along Kanaal Veendam Musselkanaal near Stadskanaal, there are 90 fishing jetties and one jetty accessible to people with reduced mobility. It is an easily accessible stretch of water where you can park your car right next to your jetty. The water is home to many species of fish, but mainly whitefish. This makes it very popular with competitive anglers.

Along the canals

Groningen has a number of beautiful, wide canals such as the Eemskanaal, the Van Starkenborgkanaal, the Noord Willemskanaal and the Winschoterdiep. These extend from the city of Groningen in all directions. These waterways are excellent spots for catching whitefish and zander. Find a lovely spot by a canal and be amazed by the abundance of fish in these waters.

National Park Lauwersmeer

Following the closure off the Lauwerszee, the Lauwersmeer area was formed. It is one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Netherlands. As well as all the remarkable birds you’ll find there, it’s also a great spot for fishing. The area offers the complete package: peace, tranquillity, good catches, a sense of anticipation and a fabulous setting where it’s more the rule than the exception to see a kingfisher fly past. Here on the water, the boundary between Groningen and Friesland disappears. There are various spots around the lake where you can get out onto the water. For example, from Paviljoen La Barca or from the marina.

Oldambtmeer

Fishing enthusiasts are also very welcome in Oldambt. The Oldambtmeer has healthy sediment and good water quality. Fish arrived in the area more or less spontaneously, as ducks and other waterbirds carried eggs from other water bodies with them during their migrations. The connections to the Winschoterdiep and other ditches surrounding the lake also helped to expand the fish population. At present, the lake is mainly home to roach, bream and pike. Take a look at the brochure ‘Fishing in Blauwestad’ published by the Groningen Drenthe Angling Federation to ensure you are fully up to date with the regulations in this area.

Westerwolde

Tucked away in Oost Groningen lies an area with a magical atmosphere: ‘Westerwolde’. The natural surroundings in Westerwolde are stunning, especially when you’re right in the middle of them. For example, with your fishing rod by the Westerwoldse Aa, an ancient river that eventually flows into the Dollard. Enjoy the peace and quiet – and who knows, you might suddenly feel that tug on your line from a big fish! In Westerwolde, you’ll find, amongst other things, a large population of bream, roach and tench. But there are also predatory fish such as pike and zander. A great deal of work is being done in this area to enhance its natural riches. For example, weirs have been removed and fish ladders installed between Wedde and Ter Apel. This allows the fish to swim from the Aa rivers to the sea and back again. Good news for eels, river lampreys and three-spined sticklebacks.

Winsum

Winsum is not only a beautiful village, but also an excellent spot for fishing. You can catch fine pike all year round in the Winsumerdiep. Had your fill of fishing? Then take a stroll through one of the most beautiful villages in the Netherlands.

Zuidbroek

This is a well-known fishing spot in Groningen. The Oude Winschoterdiep is a tributary of the Winschoterdiep and is known for the many different species of fish that can be caught here from June to September.

Midwolda

At De Kolk in Midwolda, you can go trout fishing and catch fish in the ‘catch and release’ pond. A mix of salmon and rainbow trout is stocked in the trout pond. Sometimes golden trout or char can also be found swimming in the water. The fishing spot is located at the Oldambster Boerderij. Here you’ll find a café and terrace. You can pop into the café for a bite to eat and a drink.
