Groningen is bursting with the very best fishing spots. What is a good fishing spot for you depends on the fish you want to catch. But we will give you a few tips anyway. Is that not enough for you? You can fish very well in the city. The city canals, ponds and lakes have excellent fishing. The city canals are known for good whitefish and pikeperch, and the ponds and lakes are full of carp and bream. On the Kanaal Veendam Musselkanaal near Stadskanaal, there are 90 fishing jetties and one disabled jetty. It is an easily accessible water where you can park your car behind your jetty. The water hosts many species of fish, but mainly whitefish. This makes the water very popular among match anglers.

Groningen has some nice big canals such as the Eemskanaal, van Starkenborgkanaal, Noord Willemskanaal and Winschoterdiep. These run from the city of Groningen in all directions. In these water highways are a good spot to catch whitefish and zander. Find a nice spot along a canal and be surprised by the fishing richness of these waters.

After the Lauwerszee was closed off, the Lauwersmeer area was created. It is one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Netherlands. Apart from all the special birds you will find there, you can also do some great fishing here. The area offers a complete picture: peace, quiet, good catches, building tension and a fabulous environment where it is the rule rather than the exception that the kingfisher flies by. Here on the water, the border between Groningen and Friesland disappears. At several places around the lake you can take to the water. For example, from Pavilion La Barca or from the marina.

Oldambt also welcomes fishing enthusiasts. Oldambtmeer has a healthy bottom and good water quality. Fish came to the area more or less spontaneously, as ducks and other water birds took eggs with them on their flight from other wetlands. Connections to Winschoterdiep and other ditches around the lake also expanded the fish stock. Currently, roach, bream and pike mainly inhabit this area. Hidden away in Oost Groningen lies an area with a magical aura "Westerwolde". Nature in Westerwolde is beautiful. Especially when you are in the middle of it. For instance, with your fishing rod along the Westerwoldse Aa, an old river that eventually flows into the Dollard. Enjoy the peace and quiet, and who knows, maybe there will be a sudden tap on your rod from a big fish! In Westerwolde, you will find, among others, a large population of bream, roach and tench. But also predatory fish like pike and zander. The area is working hard to improve its natural riches. Between Wedde and Ter Apel, for instance, weirs have been removed and fish ladders created. This allows fish to swim from the Aa's to the sea and back again. Good news for eels, river lamprey and three-spined sticklebacks.

Winsum is not only a beautiful village, but also a very good fishing spot. In the Winsumerdiep, you catch some nice pike all year round. Fished out? Then take a stroll through one of the most beautiful villages in the Netherlands.

This is a well-known fishing spot in Groningen. The Oude Winschoterdiep is a tributary of the Winschoterdiep and is known for the many different species of fish you can catch here from June to September.

At De Kolk in Midwolda, you can go trout fishing and catch fish in the 'catch&release' pond. A mix of salmon and rainbow trout is released in the trout pond. Sometimes gold trout or Saibling also swim in the water. The fishing spot is located at the Oldambster Farm. An eatery and terrace are located here. In the café you can have a snack and a drink.
