Autumn half-term in Oldambt

It’s always the big question: what shall we do this autumn half-term? Fortunately, there’s plenty to get up to in Oldambt this autumn. Pay a visit to Heiligerlee, let off steam in a huge playground or have a game of tennis in Oostwold. Where will you be enjoying the autumn?

Get some fresh air at the Kiekkaaste

Aspiring birdwatchers will enjoy taking a look at the Kiekkaaste birdwatching hide. At Nieuwe Statenzijl, just outside the dykes, stands the well-known Kiekkaaste, where you can spot the most beautiful and sometimes even rare bird species. It offers a magnificent view and is also a great spot for a picnic with the children. You can even close the shutters to keep out the strong wind. A wonderful nature-filled outing for the whole family.

Shopping in Winschoten

Winschoten is the second-largest shopping town in the province of Groningen. The range of shops is very diverse, from large, well-known chains to small boutiques where you can buy lovely gifts, clothes and accessories. The advantage is that you can easily park for free near the shops. There are various spots around the town where you can enjoy a lovely cup of coffee or a leisurely lunch. Isn’t a day’s shopping just lovely?

’t Speulparadies Beerta

't Speulparadies is a large fenced-off playground where children can let off steam to their heart’s content. For example, you can play on the cable car, on the bouncy castle or go on an adventure along the adventure trail. Another bonus for parents: whilst the children are playing, you can enjoy a cup of coffee on the terrace. As well as a large playground, there’s also a petting zoo with goats, rabbits, chickens and even alpacas. There’s plenty to do at 't Speulparadies.

Oostwold

The weather is often still lovely during the autumn half-term. The old farmhouse Huninga’s Heem, with its beautiful swing set, is the perfect place to spend the afternoon with the children. Playing golf is fun for young and old alike on this 18-hole course. Why not ask Grandad and Grandma to come along too? They’ll love the beautiful surroundings with views of Oldambtmeer .

Heiligerlee

At the edge of Heiligerlee you will find the monument of the dying Count Adolf of Nassau, sheltered by the Dutch Virgin and the Dutch Lion. Here, on 23 May 1568, the battle took place that, under the name 'Battle of Heiligerlee', became the beginning of the freedom struggle against Spanish rule and terror by the Duke of Alva. An Experience Route takes you across the former battlefield, which of course looks different now. You will come across all kinds of adventurous play tasks and experience equipment, such as wooden play equipment and natural play locations including pools with stepping stones. A nice route booklet is available at the Museum Slag bij Heiligerlee, which is also worth a visit.

Ennemaborg

During the national ‘Night of the Night’ on 26 October, you can take a special evening walk, led by guides, through the Ennemaborg Estate in Midwolda. Discover just how dark it really is in the woods at night and experience nature in a unique way. Without artificial light, you’ll see the starry sky more clearly, and with a bit of luck, you’ll hear nocturnal animals. A wonderful, adventurous outing for young and old alike, right in the heart of nature.

Cultural excursions in De Klinker

At the Klinker, there are plenty of cultural outings for children this autumn holiday. For toddlers, there is the performance VO-LU-ME on 30 October. Theatre-makers Karlijn Hamer and Bram van Helden take children and their (grand)parents on an imaginative journey, in which playing and wonder are central. Also running is the children's film Victor Bat, a heartwarming story about a bat who is afraid of the dark but finds love and courage. Perfect for a cosy family outing!
