In theory, you could go fishing in Drenthe whilst keeping your feet firmly planted on Groningen soil. Although that’s a bit of a bit of a joke, of course. Just across the border in Drenthe, you’ll find some fantastic nature reserves that are well worth a visit for fishing. Near Glimmen, for example. Do go and have a look. You’ll find everything you need for a great fishing adventure.
A haven for migratory fish: the Lieversche Diep
Right next to the village of Lieveren in Drenthe, the Lieversche Diep meanders. Or, as you might say, the ‘Lieversche Diepje’. This shallow, flowing river is an important nursery area for migratory fish. The water is rich in oxygen and the fish find good shelter there. But that’s not all. Something special has been built here to make life even easier for the fish – no, it’s no joke – a fish ladder. It’s not only very beautiful to look at, but also extremely useful.
Take the (fish) ladder
To prevent our country from flooding, the water management of inland waters has been considerably restricted over the years. Weirs, pumping stations and sluices are examples of barriers that have been built to ensure that our feet stay dry. Nice for people, but not so nice for migratory fish, which find it more difficult to make their way from the sea to the inland waterways. To help the fish with this, some barriers have been equipped with so-called fish passages or fish ladders. A river with baffles is dug around the weir, bridging the gradient. This way, the fish do not have to jump over a weir or swim against a strong current, but can simply get off the fish-friendly ladder. Improving the connection between the Wadden Sea, Lauwersmeer and the waters beyond is the aim of the Fish for Connection project.

In search of pike
A little further downstream, it’s a fantastic spot to cast a line. You must stay at least 50 metres away from the fish passage, as you’re not allowed any closer. The water is a bit deeper there, the current is less strong and there are plenty of aquatic plants. Connoisseurs know: that’s a good spot to hook a pike. But even those new to fishing can enjoy this water-rich area. After all, you can of course go for a lovely walk here without bait or a rod. In fact, it’s highly recommended. It’s absolutely beautiful there.
Even if you don’t catch a single thing
Fishing isn’t just about that one moment of triumph when a hungry fish takes the bait. Let’s be honest: the fish don’t always bite eagerly. Sometimes you’re in luck, but sometimes you’re not. Fortunately, a day out in nature offers plenty of enjoyment in itself. Look up and you’ll see geese and birds of prey in the sky. Look down and watch the frogs and grasshoppers dancing at your feet in the tall grass. Angler Jan Willem: “Nature in the Netherlands is so incredibly beautiful. For young and old alike
What could be more fun than going on an adventure with your little ones? Children love being outdoors. Especially when they get to see the animals from the books and films they’ve seen at home in real life – or even touch them! What’s more, children up to the age of 14 are allowed to fish in many waters without a licence. The only condition is that they are accompanied by an adult who holds the correct fishing permits.
