Situated in the southernmost tip of the province and bordering the German border is a distinctive walking trail (12.5km) that takes you through the centuries-old history of Ter Apel. The area is set in a forest more than a thousand years old and houses the only remaining monastery in the province of Groningen. Walk winding paths along the banks of the Bosbeek stream and enjoy an intimate landscape of woods, heathland, arable land and fens.
Oldest forest in Groningen
The route mainly takes you through Groningen's oldest piece of forest. This forest was planted around the year 800 for timber production. Nature has now taken its own course, but it gives you the chance to discover everything this area has to offer. For instance, this is the only place in the Netherlands where you can still find the steenbraam. This persistent shrub can be recognised by its red berries. In summer, beautiful white flowers also grow on the bush.
