Cycling route through the Groningen polders
Nature is everywhere
The Martinitoren waves you off as you leave the city. With the sun on your face, a short while later you’ll be cycling through the cosy village of Helpman. As you then cycle over the Hondsrug into the Haren area, the first rolling meadows come into view on your left. A lovely foretaste of what lies ahead. The further you leave the city behind, the greener it gets. From Glimmen to Zuidlaren: nature is everywhere. You’ll see plenty from your bike, but stap off for a bit now and then. Take your time. Look around you and enjoy the Groningen grasslands, the wooded surroundings and the many birds singing.
Welcome to the Ommeland
With the church at Zuidlaren in your kielzog , you head along the long, winding Hunzeweg. A little further on, a farmer is fertilising his field with his old-fashioned tractor. For a few kilometres, you’re surrounded by meadows. You’re now truly out in the countryside. When, a little later, the village centre of Kropswolde comes into view, turn left. Towards the polder. The landscapes change rapidly. You’re now cycling through the woods and come across the birdwatching hide, situated on the aptly named Polderpad. Climb the steps and look out over the Kropswolderbuitenpolder. You’ll want to see more of this.
Wet nature, dry feet
You get back on your bike and cycle a little further through the splendour of the polder. Wet countryside, but dry feet. There’s space, there’s openness. This reflects in your state of mind. You feel free; a sense of calm settles in your mind. The sun glistens on the water and the many imposing Scottish Highland cattle graze in the grass. You could almost stroke them, they’re standing so close. But they won’t harm you. At most, they’ll look at you with a touch of surprise. That’s their way of welcoming you. In the background, you can hear the clear calls of the grebe and other waterbirds.
