Groningen is bursting with creativity. It’s a place teeming with free spirits who do their own thing, using the city as their canvas. Especially for the ‘Art is all around you’ campaign, various creative talents from Groningen have produced illustrations that celebrate the city’s culture. We’d like to introduce you to these artists.
Rommie Schilstra
Rommie Schilstra holds Groningen’s cultural sector very close to her heart. For many years, she has been designing posters for concerts and festivals, which she also enjoys attending. Music and design are her two great passions, and she loves being able to combine them. These days, Rommie mainly does this at VERA and Chordify. And would she like to design a poster for this brilliant campaign? She didn’t need to think twice about that – absolutely!

Visit the websiteVAAF
VAAF is a Grunnegs illustration duo consisting of Lotte Masker and Jonna Bo Lammers. They are two illustrators who love working amidst the hustle and bustle, because chaos breeds creativity. That’s why they enjoy creating live illustrations at events. And above all, murals on location! They work mainly with paint, hence the name ‘VAAF’; the Groningen dialect word for paint.

Having spent years designing and screen-printing posters for international bands and concert venues, Mara Piccione’s roots lie in underground pop culture. From there, she has increasingly developed her screen-printing into a body of independent work. Her screen prints are easily recognisable by their stylised forms, bold blocks of colour and the use of transparent colours; a style that clearly has its origins in the use of graphic techniques. All her screen prints are produced by hand in her own screen-printing studio in Warffum.
Visit the websiteJan Hamstra
Jan Hamstra is an illustrator from Groningen. Whilst studying at Academie Minerva , he became fascinated by traditional printmaking techniques, particularly woodcut and linocut. Nowadays, all his work begins with these techniques. Sometimes it remains a black-and-white print of the woodcut or linocut, but much more often the print is subsequently coloured and ends up as a screen-printed concert poster for VERA or a book cover.
