Groninger Museum
Extraverted and multicoloured structure in the water
Creative energy splashes from the walls. Beautiful or ugly? The Groninger Museum has been there since 1994, but is still the subject of discussion on modern architecture. Let that surely be reason enough for a visit. The diverse collection and innovative, occasionally quite stimulating exhibitions complete the experience.
Colour in the water
You can hardly avoid it as a visitor to Groningen. Anyone walking from the Hoofdstation towards the city centre will almost certainly cross the colourful museum bridge. This is also the immediate route towards the door of the Groninger Museum Museum, a postmodern building in the middle of the ring of canals. This bold building was designed by Italian Alessandro Mendini in collaboration with De Luchi, Starck and Coop Himmelblau. Each of the three pavilions is different, yet together they overwhelmingly form one whole.
Passion and daring
In Groningen, we like to do things just a little differently. With every exhibition, the museum challenges itself and thus its visitors to look at visual art with a different perspective. Well-known examples are the well-attended exhibitions of Russian painting and the David Bowie exhibition. With passion and daring, the museum manages to tackle themes that are innovative, yet also appeal to a wide audience. The permanent collection is also worth a visit: historical objects that tell the history of Groningen, Asian ceramics and, of course, paintings by the Groningen art group De Ploeg.
