Looking at the farmer

Spring and summer is peak time for farmers. All sorts of things happen in the fields and yards, but often, as a passer-by, you only get a glimpse of it. Curious about farm life? Do you ever wonder why cows have yellow ear tags, or how sugar gets into a sugar beet?? Then this is your chance to look beyond the ditch side.

Take a look around the farmyard

Much of Het Hogeland is pure farmland. Vast fields full of potatoes, grain, beetroot and maize, interspersed with meadows where cattle graze peacefully. Among all that greenery you will find farms that have sometimes been in the same place for generations. North Groningen is one of the best agricultural areas in Europe for a reason: the soil is fertile and the climate cooperates. Behind all those fields is a world full of craftsmanship, clever techniques and years of experience. Farms are constantly evolving and are an indispensable link in our food chain.

Curious about what farm life is like in practice? Some members of LTO Noord (Het Hogeland division) open their farms to the public from May to September. On the first Saturday of the month, you are welcome between 13:00 and 17:00 to take a look behind the scenes yourself. In 2026, you can visit on: 2 May, 6 June, 4 July, 1 August and 5 September.
