Zoutkamp | Fisheries hiking trail

Experience the feeling of a real old-fashioned fishing village? Zoutkamp has an extensive history. During the Eighty Years' War, it was a defensive fortress, then mainly a bustling fishing village located on the then Lauwerszee. Zoutkamp is best known for shrimp fishing. This walking route takes you past places in and around the village that were (and are) important for fishing. Take a look at the Fisheries Museum and don't forget to take a seat on the waterside terrace. The perfect place to eat a fish.

In 1960, Lauwersoog was a mudflat that flooded twice a day. To close off the Lauwerszee, the Lauwersoog working island was built here. In 1969, the closure of the Lauwerszee was completed and Lauwersoog was able to develop further.
