Shopping outside the city centre

There’s plenty of shopping to be had outside Groningen city centre too. For example, in less than half an hour by bike, you’ll find yourself in the charming shopping centre in Haren. Is it raining? Then the covered Paddepoel is the perfect solution. In short, hop on your bike and go for a spot of shopping outside the city.

Haren

Less than half an hour’s cycle ride from the city, you’ll find the many shops of Haren. Most are situated on the well-known Rijksstraatweg or in the cosy streets surrounding it. From trendy clothes shops to interior design boutiques: every shopper will find something to their liking in Haren. With fashion shops such as SOOLOO, Molenkamp and Robert, there’s something to suit every budget. And when you’ve finished shopping or just fancy a break, take a seat at one of the many lovely outdoor cafés. Or enjoy an ice cream from Italini at the foot of the Nicolaaskerk.

Reitdiephaven

At Reitdiephaven , you can not only enjoy the view of the famous colourful houses, but also do some lovely shopping! There’s a children’s clothes shop, a water sports shop, a bookshop and a home accessories shop, amongst others. After your shopping trip, enjoy a snack or dinner at one of the restaurants or cafés, with a stunning view over the ever-colourful harbour.

South Groningen

In the southern part of Groningen, there are several great places to go shopping. Pay a visit to the shopping centres on Van Lenneplaan or Overwinningsplein, or pop into the Helpman shopping centre. Here, for example, you can hunt for hidden gems at the Mamamini charity shop or treat your children to a new outfit at Jack & Julia. Helpman also has plenty of lovely little spots where you can enjoy an ice cream or have a leisurely lunch or dinner.

Paddepoel

At winkelcentrum Paddepoel , you’ll find everything under one roof. Pick up the tastiest delicacies at the Zuivelhoeve, some lovely fish at Pasèl or a cup of coffee at the Barista Café. Whilst you sit back and relax on a bench, your child can have fun in the playground. And you can park your car for free for the first hour and a half, so you’ve plenty of time to enjoy a spot of shopping.

Hoendiep/Peizerweg

Just outside the centre of Groningen, you’ll find the Woonboulevard Groningen. It’s only a 10-minute cycle from the centre. Coming by car? You can park for free. Stroll around the boulevard and be inspired by the kitchen, bathroom and interior design shops on the Hoendiep. You can also pop into the charity shop for second-hand items. Settle down in a café for a cup of coffee or lunch. And afterwards, carry on shopping in one of the 60 home furnishing shops.

Ten Boer

You’ll find almost everything you need at the Ten Boer shopping centre. And it’s just a 20-minute drive from the city. The generous opening hours are really handy, with late-night shopping on Friday evenings.
