Ennemaborg walking route
Near Midwolda, in the heart of de Graanrepubliek, you'll find Ennemaborg. A borg that is actually not a real borg at all. But borg or no borg, the estate is a great place for a spring walk. Walk along through the baroque park garden, a special forest and among the horses. Along the way, you will discover how much this estate has to offer.
The deposit that is not a deposit
Your walk starts at Ennemaborg itself. Although the name suggests otherwise, this stately home is officially not a real borg. In fact, the borg has never had 'lordly rights' attached to it. This is because the city of Groningen took control of Oldambt early on, preventing the landed gentry from developing in the area. Yet Ennemaborg does have the stature of a real borg.
Around the borg you will find a baroque park garden. In this garden are two workers' cottages. These have been fully restored and are now among the oldest houses in Midwolda. Behind the borg is a pond full of reeds, water lilies and frogs. It is a remnant of the moat that once surrounded the entire borg. While you're on this side, take a closer look at the borg itself. Do you notice that this used to be the front of the building?
