Walking in Midden-Groningen

It is one of the tastiest activities in this nice weather: walking. Fun to do, good for your fitness and it also does wonders for your mood. In Midden-Groningen, too, there are plenty of beautiful spots to discover on a walk. We have listed a few walking routes in this region for you.

Dredging pits

On the border of Froombosch and Slochteren you will find the Baggerputten, a very varied nature reserve. It is ideal for a round of hiking, as you can walk around the 'dredging pit'. "This is where dredging peat used to be dug out," explains forester Annet de Jong. "Now around the water you find broekbos, a kind of swamp forest with willows and alders. You can see the moss very nicely there. There is reed grassland and there are tree lines, but also small pieces of forest that we do nothing about. That variety ensures that lots of different plants and animals feel at home in the Baggerputten."

Slochterbos and Welgelegen

Couple Anjo and Gini Grimmius hike a bit. Their favourite places to walk are the well-known Slochterbos, and the slightly less well-known Overbos opposite the Fraeylemaborg in Slochteren. They also often walk from another borg: Welgelegen in Sappemeer. "You can park in front of the borg and then walk along the water to the back, towards Borgercompagnie. From there you can choose: turn left towards the Adriaan Tripbos, or turn right around the grounds of Groot Woelwijk." The garden of the borg is freely accessible. "In summer it's beautiful," tips Gini, "then the rhododendrons bloom."

Nature reserve 't Roegwold

Between Overschild, Steendam and the sand ridge from Siddeburen to Harkstede lies 't Roegwold. Walk a short route or opt for a longer one. The many waters in this nature reserve are a true paradise for all kinds of water birds and provide a feast for the many hunters such as herons, harriers, sea eagles and foxes. Rest on a bench halfway along the Knuppelpad, before continuing your route across the 750-metre wooden decking through Dannemeer Lake. At an appropriate distance, enjoy the peat moor reed beds, rare nature where plants take precedence, or experience the ancient cultural-historical landscape in the herbaceous hay meadows around Woudbloem.

Hiking with children

Especially for the little ones, a fun walking route with beautifully painted gnome posts has been set out in the Steendamster forest. The gnome trail is suitable for toddlers, but is also fun for primary school children. By following the gnomes, you will automatically find the right way through the forest via the short or longer route. Of course, you can walk with children in many more places. Want to make it a bit more interactive? With the app Perfect Earth Animals you can search for digital animal maps at the Baggerputten or in 't Roegwold.
