Noordkaap
The northernmost tip of the mainland
There was already nothing like Groningen, but nowhere does that apply more doubly than at Noordkaap. Noordkaap is the northernmost tip of mainland Netherlands. Artwork 'De Hemelpoort' marks the exact spot. From here you have a clear view over the water and the infinite sky above the Wadden Sea.
Hemelpoort
'The Hemelpoort' is an impressive 2.5-metre-high gate made of Corten steel. Exposure to the weather (and there is plenty of that here) has given the gate its rust-brown colour. Groningen artist René de Boer actually named his gate 'Gate Cape North', but 'The Hemelpoort' soon became a popular favourite. Standing here on top of the dike and looking out over the sandbanks, you can only agree.
On foot or by bicycle
You are not just standing next to the gateway to heaven. Noordkaap is about 10 kilometres north of Uithuizermeeden. From the village, there are signs. Follow the route by car, bike or on foot. The last kilometre can only be walked or cycled. After a 15-minute walk, you are at the top of the seawall. Next to 'De Hemelpoort' is a bench to rest on. How beautiful emptiness can be.
