Haren
What’s on?
Hortus Botanicus
In the middle of Haren, you will find one of the oldest and largest botanical gardens in the Netherlands. Wander around among special plants from all over the world and be surprised anew on every path. There is plenty for young and old to discover here. With the Hortus App, you can even talk to special trees and plants. The highlight of the Hortus is the special Chinese Ming garden, the only one in Europe. This summer, you can see various works of art in the Hortus during the exhibition Sculptures in the Hortus. Wondering what it's like to have this special place all to yourself? Then stay overnight in the Hortus Hermitage: a cosy 'pod' for two, made from an old food silo.
Take a lookDe Biotoop
In the woods next to the Hortus stands the former Biological Centre of the University of Groningen. These days, it’s the place to be for creative types. The building is home to 180 residents, 150 artists and a further 100 entrepreneurs who have made it their home. A wonderfully diverse group, then. As a result, fun activities and workshops are often organised here, such as yoga and mindfulness. This summer, they are organising the #bioTOPvakantie, where children can take part in various workshops under the guidance of professional artists, musicians, filmmakers and a philosopher.
Take a lookFriday Market at Raadhuisplein
Every Friday, a lively weekly market is held on the ever-bustling Raadhuisplein in the centre of the village. Here you can pick up the very best produce, fresh and delicious. No slices of cheese from a plastic packet, but a lovely big chunk cut especially for you. Apples that look as if they’ve just been picked from the tree. Or a delicious warm stroopwafel. You really can’t get any fresher than that.
Take a lookShopping in the city centre
Those looking for a day of shopping will certainly succeed in Haren. Around the Raadhuisplein and the church, it is full of cute little shops and boutiques. Besides the better-known chain shops, there are many local entrepreneurs. For instance, ladies can go to Mignon by Marlieke for new clothes and gentlemen can visit Robert Herenmode. For nice new items for the home, you can visit Van Schilfgaarde Interieur. There is plenty of fun for everyone here.
Take a lookFood from all corners of the globe
Haren is also the right place for a culinary meal. Whatever you are in the mood for, you can find everything here: a good pizza, pasta or lasagne at Ristorante Mediterraneo, an authentic Indian bite at Sher E Bangla and tasty Chinese and Japanese dishes at Yugo. Do you like to be surprised? Then you can also go for Bistro Heerlijk's surprise menu.
Take a lookDe Mikkelhorst
On the outskirts of Haren, you’ll find the ecological zorgboerderij De Mikkelhorst. The location itself is fantastic, surrounded by lush greenery. As an ecological care farm, De Mikkelhorst strives for harmony with nature and its surroundings. People with disabilities are given the opportunity to work here. At the petting farm, you can, of course, cuddle the goats, let off steam in the playground and buy fresh produce in the farm shop. It’s a lovely place to be.
Take a lookArcheologisch wandelpark 'De Vork'
On the outskirts of the village lies the small walking park ‘De Vork’. It’s a lovely park where, whilst out for a walk, you can also learn all sorts of things about the history of this place. During the groundworks for the park, it turned out that the soil was full of remarkable artefacts from the past. The walking park has therefore been transformed into an archaeological walking park where you can learn about these finds.
