On holiday in Midden-Groningen

Do you like water and beach? Then Zuidlaardermeer is a wonderful place to stay. You can do all kinds of water sports on the lake. From a lovely dive in the water or a sailing trip to canoeing and kite surfing. Or search for (traces of) the big five of the Hunzedal; the beaver, otter, bittern, white-cheeked tern and white-tailed eagle, for instance during an excursion by Het Groninger Landschap or from the bird-watching hut. At Allround Watersport or Siblu Camping Meerwijck, you can moor your own boat, park your camper or rent a luxury chalet. Prefer to stretch your legs? Walk or cycle around the lake and discover the versatility of this stream valley of the Hunze.

The peat-colonial villages of Kiel-Windeweer, Borgercompagnie and Tripscompagnie breathe plenty of history. Peat ships sailed here and beautiful farmhouses stand right by the road. There are several B&Bs that are a good starting point for cycling and canoeing routes through the Veenkoloniën. In the old pastorie of De Amshoff, you can stay overnight overlooking the English landscape garden. Further on in Kiel-Windeweer you will find Romala's Home, a B&B with a large bamboo garden next door. At Peddel en zo you can stay overnight as well as rent canoes. In Borgercompagnie, artist Lammert Boerma has his own studio, gallery and B&B at home. Here you sleep among art. A unique experience!

Can't your kids get enough of romping around in nature? Or do you want to completely unwind yourself? Then book one of the luxuriously furnished safari tents at Camping De Heemtuin just outside Muntendam. You can hardly get any closer to nature, as the tents overlook Tussen de Venen. This nature reserve looks like it did in prehistoric times. Sheep and goats walk to maintain the area. The Mammoth Path is next to the campsite and is an adventurous path with a raft and rope bridges, so plenty of fun for the kids!

Midden-Groningen is also a wonderful holiday destination for walking enthusiasts. 't Roegwold is a unique nature area that is perfect for long walks. Walking among the high grass, you can hear frogs, a cuckoo and, in the distance, the bittern. 't Roege Pad, which runs through 't Roegwold, consists of four beautiful, 'rugged' walking routes between 18 and 23 km. From the Hof van Kolham campsite you can stap straight into 't Roegwold and your walking tour can start immediately. For the real sports enthusiasts, there are even more fun outdoor activities here, such as canoeing, climbing, mountain biking and archery.

The cosy Minicamping 't Hofje in Slochteren is also a good base for a walk through 't Roegwold. Here you can imagine yourself surrounded by greenery. There are horses in the adjacent meadow and goats and chickens in the animal pasture. Prefer a cottage?
