Meet Hassan Sallom and Zain Kadora from Barbershop Winsum. Just over seven years ago, Hassan came to the Netherlands from Syria with the dream of one day starting his own barbershop. After completing his training and spending four years working for an employer in Groningen, he seized the opportunity in the spring of 2021 to make his dream a reality on Hoofdstraat in Winsum, together with his business partner and colleague Zain. When Hassan heard that the premises formerly occupied by Bakkerij Rutgers were due to become vacant, he went to take a look straight away. Thanks to a chance encounter with a passer-by, he managed to find out the owner’s phone number, and four days later, they had their first viewing. The rest is history. Hassan and Zain transformed the bakery into a proper barbershop and welcomed their first customer in July of that year.
Not customers, but guests
Hassan clearly has a great passion for his trade, and this is further supported by his family in Syria. “Our background makes the business unique. We learnt slightly different cutting techniques back home, and our customers really appreciate that.” In fact, Hassan and Zain prefer to refer to their clients as ‘guests’, as they believe it’s very important to get to know the people in the chair properly. “We’re sometimes barbers and psychologists rolled into one,” Hassan explains proudly.

Winsum has embraced us
Hassan describes Winsum as a lovely village with very friendly and open-minded people. “Even before we’d even opened, people were already coming to have a look and wishing us luck.” Because everyone was so positive right from the start, Hassan and Zain immediately felt that the barbershop would be a success. “The people in Winsum are so friendly; they’ve really taken us under their wing.” Hassan’s first dream – to have his own barbershop – has come true. Now he and Zain are working flat out to offer as many people as possible a fresh haircut, a nice cup of coffee and a listening ear.
