Transport in the province
For convenience, take the train or bus instead of the car. Groningen has an excellent public transport network. Find out here how best to travel within the province, from Aduard to Bedum and other destinations.
By bus
The bus is the best way to get around the province. From the city to the surrounding countryside: the bus takes you everywhere. Qbuzz operates the bus services for Groningen and the surrounding area. Arriva operates services to Friesland and Drenthe. Both Qbuzz and Arriva buses usually depart from the central main station, situated on the outskirts of Groningen city centre.

There are two railway companies operating in Groningen: NS and Arriva. If you’re travelling within the province, or to Friesland, you’ll probably need to take an Arriva train. Want to go a bit further afield? Then take an NS train.
The city has three railway stations: Groningen Central Station, Europapark Station and Groningen-Noord Station. The first of these is the largest and has good connections to the rest of the Netherlands. You can also catch a train from here to almost any destination in the province. Take the train, for example, to the sauna in Bad-Nieuweschans, the Veenkoloniaal museum in Veendam or to a section of the Pronkjewailpad in Delfzijl. There are plenty of options: Groningen has a total of thirty railway stations. An excellent way to explore the province, then!

The bicycle is the go-to mode of transport in the city, but it’s also very handy outside the city too. You can leave your own bike at home and easily hire a public transport bike. Groningen’s main railway station has a whole rack full of them. In addition, there are various OV-fiets lockers at the stations in Groningen-Noord, Haren, Hoogezand-Sappemeer, Appingedam, Delfzijl, Veendam, Winschoten, Winsum and Zuidhorn. So there’s always one available for you!

The standard travel ticket in the Netherlands is the OV-chipkaart. In Groningen, this card is used for both trains and buses. Of course, you can also simply buy a single ticket on the bus itself. Recently, these tickets can only be paid for by debit card. Read more about the OV-chipkaart via the link below.
