Route 38: The Aaltjeroute, Smeerling

|
55 minutes (4 km)

This route follows the story of the girl Aaltje and is 4 kilometres long.

Aaltje is a girl from Westerwolde in Groningen. She was born in 1786 in Smeerling, a hamlet between Onstwedde and Vlagtwedde.

In 1909, Albert Wilzing and Wupke Maarsingh built a new farmhouse in Smeerling. Some 70 years later, old papers emerge when removing the floorcloth under the stove plate in a bedroom. Dirty and damaged, but with a magnifying glass most of the text can be deciphered.

Along the way, you will find six yellow signs where you can scan a QR code with your smartphone, which allows you to listen to an audio clip about the history of Aaltje and her family.

We would advise you to first take a look at the website www.aaltjesstee.nl to get acquainted with Aaltje's world.
