Tips for the autumn holidays

The autumn holiday is just around the corner. Time for colourful leaves, mushrooms and fun family activities. Whether you are looking for adventure in nature, creative challenges or a cultural outing, there is something for everyone. We have listed some tips for the whole family.

On an adventure with the steam train

19, 22 & 26 October - During the autumn holidays it is party time for railway adventurers. Children aged up to and including 12 can ride the steam train of Museumspoorlijn STAR for free. The train runs between Veendam and Stadskanaal. During the trip, take part in a Railway Quiz and go bear hunting on the train and at the stations! Also visit the museum, where you can learn about how trains used to run in this region.

Cinekid films in the Forum

11 to 26 October - Cinekid is the largest film and media festival for children in the Netherlands. From comedy to animation and from documentaries to fantasy films, there is something for everyone. It doesn't stop there. Cinekid Festival also organises all kinds of activities around the films. Visit the MediaLab with cool digital artworks and games or take part in a creative workshop. A perfect outing for a day with bad weather, when you want to be indoors.

DoeZoo in Leens

Daily - Animals and adventure come together in DoeZoo during the holidays. Here you can not only see the animals, but also touch and feel them. From an interactive guided tour, to a visit to the museum and from a romp in the playground to a bite to eat at the restaurant. You can do it all at DoeZoo.

Magical Samhain Bourtange

25 & 26 October - The last weekend of the autumn holidays is Samhain, an ancient festival that celebrates the transition to winter. During the festival, Stap into a world full of magic, ghosts and time travellers and dress up in fairytale clothes like many other visitors. Enjoy performances, fire shows, stilt walkers and enchanted characters and discover stalls with all kinds of beautiful things. You won't want to miss this journey through the magical world.

Mega Indoor Bouncy Castle Festival in MartiniPlaza

21 to 24 October - Are your children bursting with energy? Then go to the Mega Indoor Bouncy Castle Festival in MartiniPlaza. Enjoy the many bouncy castles, slides and assault courses all afternoon. There are also climbing towers, a rodeo bull and various football games at this festival. There is plenty of space to play and have fun safely. Parents can relax and the kids can have fun. Sounds good, right?

Nature craft afternoon on the Coendersborg estate

22 October - Fancy a creative afternoon outdoors? Then come to the nature craft afternoon at landscape Coendersborg. During this afternoon, children can work with their own found materials. Collect leaves, branches and chestnuts around the Coendersborg, a country estate just 10 minutes by bike from the centre of Groningen, and create beautiful works of art. There is room for 15 participants between 6 and 12 years old. Don't hesitate and sign up soon for this free afternoon of crafting fun!

Scavenger hunt through the Fraeylemaborg

5, 12, 19 & 26 October - Put on your knight's helmet or put on your princess dress! It's time for a scavenger hunt through the Fraeylemaborg. Every Sunday in October, you will discover how people used to live on a real borg. How does life in the past differ from life today? The scavenger hunt is an adventurous experience for the whole family in the autumn holidays. A fun activity where history and fun come together.

Will you get lost in the MOW?

Every Wednesday to Sunday in October - Go on an adventurous quest and fill your rucksack. 'Get lost' is an exhibition in which over 30 artists have gone outside to place their work in nature. Let chance determine your route and discover what surprises they encountered. You don't know in advance what you will experience and where you will end up. No signs, no plan. You might sleep in a work of art or solve secret messages. Outside, a blotevoetenpad and a museum forest full of challenges await. This challenging adventure is completely free for children up to 18 years old.

Kalkmantocht

18 October-For those who have always wanted to spot seals, the adventure starts here. Stap the charter ship in Lauwersoog and sail to the Engelsmanplaat. Here it's time for a hike on this sandbank. On the way, you'll visit the bird-watcher's house 'de Kalkman'. After visiting this beacon, you board the boat again and sail along the banks where seals can often be seen. Afterwards, the boat sails back towards the starting point.

Treasure Hunt Monastery Ter Apel

Daily - sleuths take note, as this is the perfect activity during the holidays. Visit Klooster Ter Apel. Long ago monks lived here and the treasure hunt will take you into every room of their old monastery. During this activity, you will playfully learn how monks used to live here. During the tour, you will look for hidden details, see what you can do with a quill and walk across the dark monastery attic. Do you dare to solve all the riddles?

October Children's Month

Celebrate autumn during October Children's Month in Groningen. In this month, fun, adventure and creativity take centre stage. Children between 4 and 13 years old can enjoy all kinds of fun activities.
