Stadsschouwburg
The Stadsschouwburg; the Grand Dame of Groningen culture for over 100 years and one of the most impressive theatres in the Northern Netherlands. Every year, renowned national and international companies come to the theatre to stage the most extraordinary plays.
A building full of character
At the end of the nineteenth century, two architects presented a plan for the new Stadsschouwburg: a design based on the theatre in Arnhem. Due to the high cost of the plan, considerable cuts had to be made to the design, but eventually, in 1883, the theatre was festively opened. Over the years, all kinds of modifications were made, resulting in the theatre as we know it today. A large but intimate theatre. When you step inside, you imagine yourself back in 1883. The classical ornaments, the loge and the various balconies give the theatre a unique atmosphere. Not for nothing did the stadsschouwburg receive national monument status in 1994.
