The Lauwers
The Lauwers is an important border river in the north of the Netherlands, located between the provinces of Groningen and Friesland. It is no ordinary river, but a combination of a river and an estuary. The Lauwers used to be a natural connection between the Wadden Sea and the land, but people have changed it.
Life along the river
Various types of plants grow along the banks of the Lauwers, such as reed and marsh plants. These ensure that many birds, including kingfishers, find a place to live here. Apart from birds, otters can also be found in the area. The grassy areas at the river's edge are used for farm animals, but also serve as flood plains when the river overflows its banks.
Recreation
For centuries, the Lauwers has played an important role in transport and trade, but nowadays it is mainly a place to enjoy nature. You can go boating, fishing, supping, walking and cycling. The whole area around the Lauwers is known for its beautiful nature and the many different plants and animals that live there.
Connection
The Lauwers is also a connection between 7 villages, such as Zoutkamp, Visvliet and Lauwerzijl. During a boat trip, you can stop off in each village, as there is something special to experience everywhere. In summer, July and August, the sloop ZK31 sails twice a month from the Fisheries Museum in Zoutkamp to Visvliet. During this cruise, you will be told a lot about the Lauwers and can enjoy a nice meal in Visvliet. Every two years, the villages also jointly organise the Day of the Lauwers, a lively day full of activities in the various villages along the river.
