Kluis/bedevaartkerk Warfhuizen

In 2001, Warfhuizen's old church was converted into a traditional hermitage with chapel. Since then, the church has been inhabited by an official Roman Catholic hermitage, which falls under the diocese of Groningen-Leeuwarden.

Take a closer look

After a statue of the Virgin Mary was placed there, inexplicably more and more people came to Warfhuizen who were clearly affected by that statue in a special way. The church gradually turned into a place of pilgrimage, and over time it was recognised as such. Even today, the influx continues to increase every year, with pilgrims coming from further and further afield. After the emergence of pilgrimages, the church was given a lavish Baroque interior unique to the entire north. It would not look out of place in Austria or Italy. At the same time, a Marian brotherhood was set up by parishioners of Sint-Jozefkathedraal in the city to help the hermitage accommodate pilgrims. Pilgrims come from all over the country (with a large contingent from Limburg and Brabant, of course), but also from Germany, Flanders, Wallonia and even Switzerland.
