Location
Initially, the Silver Chamber wanted to exclusively display silver from Damme silversmiths. In time, however, the area expanded to include the entire province of Groningen. Over time, much beautiful and authentic silverware has been collected.
The collection now offers quite an overview of the rich history of Groningen blacksmiths and their work. They until well into the 19th century, silversmiths were not only working in cities like Groningen, Appingedam and Winschoten, but also worked from many villages in the province. Some villages even had more than one silversmith.
Silver was valued in many walks of life and silversmiths were known for their craftsmanship and sense of tradition.
The collection is in-house and is regularly supplemented by new acquisitions and donations.

Status symbol
Silver functioned as a status symbol in the 19th century. People liked to poke fun at each other with shiny silver brandy bowls, cups, dishes, baskets, boxes, coffee and tea pots, jugs, spoons and cutlery. They also flaunted purse mounts, snuff boxes, book locks, chatelaines with belonging, shoe buckles and, for example, tobacco boxes. The style of the Groningen silversmiths is traditional shows a lot of craftsmanship.
Church silver
Besides its beautiful own silverware, the Silver Room exhibits church silver from various church congregations in the region, mainly silver cups, bread dishes and jugs on loan.
In addition, the board regularly buys Groningen silver objects and the exhibition is supplemented by donations.
Activities
Besides the permanent collection, the Silver Room regularly organises exhibitions related to the province of Groningen.
The silver collection and the exhibitions are regularly accompanied by lectures, workshops, master classes and silver weekends.
