Prinsentuin

From 1594, the Prinsenhof became the residence of the stadholders: the Princes of Nassau. Especially for them, the Prinsentuin was laid out in 1626 with a rose garden, herb garden and beautiful berceaus (path overgrown with trees).

It is one of the purest examples of a Renaissance garden in the Netherlands. The Prinsentuin is completely walled in. Partly for this reason, it is an oasis of peace in the middle of Groningen's busy city centre. From the Turfsingel, the Zonnewijzerpoort provides access to the garden. Above the sundial is a Latin text: Tempus Præteritum Nihil Futurum Incertum. Præsens Instabile Cave Ne Perdas Hoc Tuum. This can be translated as The past time is nothing, the future uncertain, the present shaky. Make sure you don't waste yours. The Prinsentuin hosts the annual Poets in the Prinsentuin festival. The garden's tearoom is also open in fine weather.
