The Future

Parties and events in industrial heritage

You can see them rising above the tall grasslands on a drive through the region: the brick factory pipes of abandoned factory halls. Former strokartonfabriek De Toekomst in Scheemda was another one of those somewhat dreary-looking reminders of the industrial revolution for a long time. Until recently, that is, because De Toekomst lives on as a characterful event site.

Industrial character

The old strawboard factory is also too interesting to tear down. That was perhaps hard to see when the machines stood rusting away among massive saplings in the empty halls. But such an eye-catcher in the landscape, which also recalls the region's cereal past, you have to be able to do something with that. Everything was repaired, preferably with the old, industrial look and feel. No stripping and starting from scratch: the steam boilers, grinding stones and drive wheels give the factory hall its unadulterated charm.

Future for The Future

In the industrial atmosphere, quirkiness comes into its own. Think of a foodtruck festival or an immense regional market. A fair with a contrary touch. Or an artistic festival. For instance, the first edition of alternative music festival Grasnapolsky in the factory hall of De Toekomst was a great success. Atmospheric and rough. It suits Groningen well.
