Museum Helmantel
Both the building and the exhibition are definitely worth a visit. Next to Andreaskerk in Westeremden, you will find this museum housed in the barn of a former pastorie. Built with thousands of centuries-old monastery stones as foundations. The exhibition features the art of Henk Helmantel, the Groningen-born and raised fine painter. He wanted to be a painter all his life and is now one of the most famous living Dutch painters. Curious about his work? In Museum Helmantel, as the name suggests, the work of Henk Helmantel is mostly on display. Works by other artists are also regularly on display.

Walking into the gallery, one immediately notices that the exhibits are arranged differently from what is usual in most galleries. With the 4-metre-high walls and the many tall windows, the artworks get exactly the space and daylight they need. Every year, Galerie Ruigewaert hosts seven changing exhibitions featuring 30 contemporary northern artists. Besides admiring the art, individuals can also bring in artworks for sale here. Definitely worth a look. And who knows, you might soon have a new creation hanging on your wall.
