Hiking in NP Lauwersmeer
Unsuspecting, you wander through the rugged nature at the bottom of the former sea. Suddenly you come face to face with a wild horse. Further on, spoonbills are sunbathing. Special orchids line the path. Take a diversion and be surprised.
Walking you see more
The area around Lauwersmeer has great appeal for walkers. And not surprisingly so, because Lauwersmeer is a wonderful and diverse nature area with a rich history. A beautiful new landscape emerged on the former seabed, an eldorado for birdwatchers and nature lovers. A place where you are welcome to explore not only during the day but also - or perhaps especially - at night. And exploring is best done on foot. Because while walking, you see and hear more details: orchids along the path, geese in the sky. Nature to stop and think about.
Hiking trails
Whether you go exploring on your own or opt for a walking route mapped out for you: it's bound to be an adventure. To help you get started, the Forestry Commission has set out eleven walking routes focusing on different themes. For example, the orchid trail, a gnome trail for the little ones and a bird trail. The routes vary in length from 1.5 to 10 kilometres and take you past special places in the area. An up-to-date overview of the walking routes can be found on the National Park Lauwersmeer website.
