Termunterzijl
Termunterzijl began in much the same way as many other Dutch coastal villages: first there was water, then people arrived. In 1601, the brand-new Termunterzijldiep and the lock ‘near the wade village of Termunten’ were put into use. The houses along the Termunterzijldiep still stand on a narrow cobbled path; cars cannot access the area. The current ‘Boog van Ziel’ lock is a picture-perfect sight dating from 1725.
Termunten
Termunten is a wierde village, founded in the early Middle Ages at the mouth of the Munte. This small river, now called ‘Ol Daipke’, separated the parish villages of Grote Munte and Lutke Munte. Both villages used to have a church, but the one in Klein Termunten was lost in the 16th century due to flooding and war.
