Meet Martine Wolters from Winsumer Zuivel on Netlaan, just outside Winsum. Martine makes the most delicious products from the milk of her own cows on the farm she runs with her husband Klaas. When they took over the farm from Klaas’s parents 10 years ago, Martine was already making yoghurt for their own consumption. “People liked it so much that they often suggested she should sell the yoghurt,” Martine recalls. In 2020, Martine put her words into action and opened a self-service shop. This means customers can pop in at any time of day, leaving Martine plenty of time to create new products and run the business alongside Klaas. The farm is now a hive of activity with customers coming and going.
An exciting process
The cows graze outdoors here from spring until the end of summer and eat grass from their own land all year round. “You can taste what a cow eats in the end product,” explains Martine. Over the years, the range has continued to expand. As well as yoghurt, she now makes other dairy products such as kefir, buttermilk, butter, hangop and custard. “The process of turning milk into yoghurt or buttermilk remains fascinating, but it’s also magical to see milk transform into yoghurt or buttermilk.”

Open every day
Winsumer Zuivel was born out of a dream to close the company’s circular economy as much as possible whilst producing delicious products. “I just think it’s really cool what we’ve achieved.” Looking to the future, Martine hopes that the dairy farm can continue to thrive and that she can keep making delicious dairy products. But first, she invites everyone to come and sample all the delicious treats Winsumer Zuivel has to offer. Come whenever you like, as the self-service shop is open every day.
